The small community of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, has a unique tradition that has been ongoing for 64 years. At the stroke of midnight on election day, all registered voters in the town cast their votes. This tradition, known as Midnight Voting, began in 1960 with Neil Tillotson, a chemist turned businessman who purchased the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch in 1954.
Tillotson organized the first midnight general election vote, getting the approval of the legislature to approve Dixville Notch as a standalone voting precinct. State law permits a precinct to close once all registered voters cast their ballots. Because the population in Dixville Notch is so tiny, the town can quickly tally and announce its results.
Voters in Dixville Notch have a record of 9-7 in correctly predicting the winner of the presidential election. In 2020, the community voted 5-0 in favor of Joe Biden over Donald Trump.
In 2024, the six registered voters split with three votes for Harris and three votes for Trump.
While Dixville Notch has maintained its midnight voting tradition, other towns that traditionally joined in on the midnight voting, such as Millsfield and Hart's Location, have decided to hold more traditional daytime voting hours this year.
